At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

- Comprehend the basic concepts of performing arts.
- Identify and understand the performative dimension in everyday life, in politics and in communication in new and traditional media.
- Understand the role of the individual as a social actor in professional and social contexts.

Syllabus

1. Performing arts and social performance
- The performance studies
- 'It' is performance vs. 'as' performance
- The types of performance
- The functions of performance

2. The world is a stage: performance in everyday life
- The representation and spectacle as structural dimensions of everyday life
- The rituals
- Politics as spectacle
- Communication as spectacle in new and traditional media

3. The individual as a social actor
- Actors and social roles
- Subject and representation
- The art of impression management


Teaching methodologies

The course is taught based on the balance between theoretical, expository and participatory classes. Inspired by the Problem Based Learning methodology, it will be made case studies and will be required presentations and reflections by the students (individual and group) as a way to promote an interactive learning process.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The assessment includes: a test (40%), classroom exercises (20%) and a teamwork (40%).
